A Guide to Preparing for Your First Aesthetic Treatment

Feeling nervous about your first visit? Don’t worry—we’ve got you covered.

If you're considering your first aesthetic treatment, it's completely normal to feel a little unsure about what to expect. Whether you're booked in for Botoxdermal fillers, or a skin treatment at The Hereford Cosmetics Clinic, knowing how to prepare can help ease nerves and ensure you get the best results possible.

This guide walks you through everything you need to know before your first appointment.

1. Do Your Research (But Don’t Stress)

Start by learning a little about the treatment you’re interested in—how it works, what it’s used for, and what results you can expect. But don’t worry if you’re still unsure. That’s exactly what your consultation is for! We’ll walk you through everything and answer all your questions.

2. Book a Consultation First

Before any treatment, we always carry out a one-on-one consultation. This gives us a chance to:

  • Understand your goals
  • Assess your facial structure and skin health
  • Recommend the most suitable treatments and discuss pricing options for that area
  • Talk through the process and expected results
  • Answer any questions you may have
  • Asses the desired treatment area
  • Look at your medical history including any conditions or medications which may affect the treatment
  • Test patch if necessary

This consultation is a relaxed, pressure-free environment. We believe in honest advice and will only recommend treatments that are genuinely right for you.

3. Avoid Blood Thinners (If Advised)

If you're having any aesthetic treatment like botox or dermal fillers, we may advise you to avoid certain blood-thinning substances for a few days beforehand. These include:

  • Aspirin
  • Ibuprofen
  • Vitamin E
  • Fish oil
  • Alcohol

This helps minimise the risk of bruising and complications. If you're on any prescribed medications, always consult with your GP before making changes.

4. Be Honest About Your Medical History

Always let your practitioner know if you:

  • Have any allergies
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have a history of skin conditions
  • Are taking any medications

Your safety is our priority, and full disclosure helps us tailor your treatment appropriately. We will always advise you if your meds are suitable with your desired treatment.

5. Have Realistic Expectations

Aesthetic treatments can create beautiful, confidence-boosting results—but they aren’t instant magic. We’ll always be transparent about what a treatment can (and can’t) do, how long it will take to see results, and what maintenance may be required.

6. Plan Around Events

If you're getting a treatment ahead of a big event (like a wedding or holiday), timing is key. Some treatments need a few days to settle, and occasional bruising or swelling can occur—especially with fillers. We recommend allowing at least:

  • 2-4 weeks before events for any injectables treatment including botox and dermal fillers
  • 10 days/2 weeks before events/holidays for IPL & Laser hair removal treatments
